Who Was Jeffrey Epstein? How Epstein Files Sparked Global Controversy

Epstein Files

Who was Epstein, whose files shook the entire world, and what was his relationship with Trump?

The secrets emerging from the Epstein Files are making headlines around the world, with the names of several prominent figures emerging.

An email message from the Epstein ‘files’ also claimed a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jeffrey Epstein, which has been rejected by the Indian Foreign Ministry.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said he had “nothing to do” with Jeffrey Epstein. Trump claimed that files released by the US Justice Department revealed a conspiracy aimed at “politically damaging him and causing him to lose the election.”

However, these recent claims have once again brought American sex offender and human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein into the limelight.

Epstein died in 2019. But six years after his death, Epstein files continue to cause concern for governments, politicians, businessmen, and prominent figures around the world.

Even though Trump has been embroiled in the Epstein Files 2026, he was the one who ordered its release. His own supporters and some Republican Party leaders have consistently pressed for the full details of the Epstein investigation to be made public.

Trump remained unconvinced for weeks, but later changed his mind and urged Republican lawmakers to vote to release the Epstein files to the public.

Both houses of the US Congress (House and Senate) passed a law ordering the Justice Department to release all the files. Trump signed it in November.

This law introduced a 30-day deadline for the release of files. However, some files will not be released, Such as files related to an ongoing criminal investigation, identifying information about Epstein’s victims, personal information that would violate privacy, or images of child sexual abuse, death, or injury.

In fact, in 2008, the parents of a 14-year-old girl told police that Jeffrey Epstein had sexually assaulted their daughter at his Palm Beach home. Photos of several girls were found in the home.

Epstein was convicted of soliciting sex work from minors and registered as a sex offender.

Epstein then struck a deal with prosecutors in Florida, sparing him much jail time.

Eleven years later, in 2019, he was again accused of running a sex trafficking ring involving underage girls. He died in jail while awaiting trial, a death that was ruled a suicide. Both investigations collected a large amount of documents, including statements from victims and witnesses, and items recovered during raids on his homes.

According to a 2025 Justice Department memo, the FBI has more than 300 gigabytes (GB) of data and evidence in the case. The Justice Department says these include numerous photographs and videos of victims, which are related to child exploitation.

These will not be made public because new laws allow survivors’ identities to be concealed. This information is part of the Epstein Files, which are being released periodically. Epstein’s British partner and former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, was also investigated separately. She was convicted in 2021 of working with Epstein to sex traffic girls.

What has Been Released about Epstein Files so far?

Three million new documents related to the Epstein Files have been released. Some material, including photographs, has already been made public. Previously, the committee had obtained thousands of documents from Epstein’s estate, mostly emails. In September 2025, a birthday book was released containing a note with Trump’s name on it. However, Trump denied writing the note.

In February 2025, just weeks after Trump became president, the Justice Department and the FBI released the first part of the Epstein Files. Some right-wing influential figures were invited to the White House, but they received only 341 pages, most of which were already publicly available. It included flight records of Epstein’s plane and who he had been in contact with, but it also withheld some names.

The vote in the US Congress was based on a discharge petition, which required the signatures of 218 lawmakers. Four Republicans and all 214 Democrats signed it. Voting took place on November 18, and the bill passed the House by a margin of 427-1.

Louisiana Republican Congressman Clay Higgins was the only one to oppose it, while some other lawmakers abstained. After the House, it passed the Senate without opposition, and Trump signed it.

Even after this process, the files are unlikely to be fully released. Attorney General Pam Bondi has the authority to withhold any information, That would harm the investigation or reveal the identity of victims. The law states that personal information can be withheld or suppressed in a way that would constitute a “clearly unreasonable invasion of privacy.”

Republicans say there’s a risk of withholding or delaying information in the name of investigations related to Epstein Files. Representative Thomas Massie said there could be attempts to withhold information in the name of investigations. In May, Attorney General Pam Bondi informed Trump, who was a longtime friend of Epstein, that he was named in FBI documents, according to the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper wrote that the name was not proof of wrongdoing. The White House called it “fake,” but an official told Reuters that Trump’s name had not been denied.

Several other big names have appeared in the public documents, including Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (former Prince and brother of King Charles III), former President Bill Clinton, and Michael Jackson.

The Clintons and the British royal family denied knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. Jackson died in 2019. Flight logs were released in September. (documents detailing passenger lists for private jets owned by Epstein) included the names of Elon Musk and Mountbatten-Windsor. Mountbatten-Windsor denied wrongdoing, while Musk said Epstein invited him to the island, but he declined.

The emails, released on November 12, named former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and former Trump aide Steve Bannon. Summers said he would step back from public engagement and accepted responsibility for his mistakes in contacting Epstein. Trump’s name also surfaced several times, but he too has consistently denied the allegations.

What was Trump and Epstein’s Relationship Like?

It appears that Trump and Epstein were friends for many years and shared similar social circles. Previously released files show Trump’s name in Epstein’s “Black Book.” Flight logs also reveal that Trump traveled on Epstein’s plane several times.

In the 1990s, they were seen together at high-class parties.

CNN photos show Epstein at Trump’s wedding to Marla Maples. In 2002, Trump called Epstein a “wonderful man.” Epstein later said that he was Donald’s closest friend for 10 years.

But Trump says he had a falling out with Epstein two years before his first arrest. By 2008, Trump said he was no longer a fan of Epstein. The White House maintains that the feud stemmed from Epstein’s behavior, and that Trump expelled him from his club because he was a “disgusting individual.”

While the Washington Post says the dispute was over land in Florida.

Staunch supporters of Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have long believed that government officials are concealing crucial truths about Epstein life and death.

Some believe that a child sexual abuse ring is operating at the top echelons of American society, which is protected by the government. This was spread through mysterious messages from a secretive figure known as “Q.” Some even claimed that Epstein was an agent of the Israeli government.

Epstein’s death

There are many questions in the minds of common people which still have not been answered, such as – why was Epstein given such a light sentence in Florida, were only Epstein and Maxwell behind these dark deeds and how did he commit suicide in jail.

However, just a week after Epstein’s death, the New York Medical Examiner officially ruled his death a suicide by hanging. The 66-year-old financier’s body was found in prison on August 10, 2019.

The US Bureau of Prisons had previously ruled his death a “probable suicide,” but this has led to numerous conspiracy theories. After this, the US Justice Department started investigating how Epstein died in the highly secure Metropolitan Correctional Center prison in New York.

Attorney General William Barr said “serious irregularities” had been discovered at the prison, which has previously held several high-profile inmates, including Mexican drug lord El Chapo and fraud convict Bernie Madoff.

Following Epstein’s death, two prison guards were suspended and an MCC warden was temporarily removed after reports that the required 30-minute monitoring of Epstein’s unit was not properly monitored.
